ENDED- Winter Reading Challenge 2010

December 1, 2009 - February 28, 2010

The Royal Reviews is hosting the Winter Reading Challenge 2010. They write:

This Challenge is the brain child of Diane from The Book Resort (aka The Moody Countess). Even though it's not Winter here in Australia at the moment, in fact we are sweltering in very high temperatures usually only seen in the height of Summer, it's nice to think 'cold' to help keep us cool.
To complete the challenge, readers must read six books which meet specific criteria as follows:

Read a book not set in the USA or England.

Read a book with “Ice”, "Frost", "Chill", "Cold" "Winter" in the title.

For Valentine's Day, choose an author whose first or last name begins with “L”.

Choose a book that is not part of a series.

Read a book written in the first-person point-of-view.

Read a book with “Mr”, “Mrs”, “Miss” or “Ms” in the title.

Challenge Guidelines:

Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate. Non-Bloggers: Include your information in the comment section on the post about the challenge.
You must read all six books to complete the challenge.
Any book format counts.
You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.
Want to join? Visit the post about the challenge.

Finish That Series Challenge 2010

January 1 - December 31, 2010

The Royal Reviews is hosting the Finish That Series Challenge in 2010.

They write:
This is an opportunity for you to finish all of those series that have been sitting on your book shelf looking at you. I don't know about you but I have quite a few. With this challenge you count series completed, not books read. I have a series with 20 books in it, although I'm not sure I'll include this one, it doesn't matter how many books are in the series or if you've read most of them and only have one or two left to read. The object of this challenge is to finish the series.
Challenge Guidelines:
Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate. Non-Bloggers: Include your information in the comment section on the post about the challenge.
Any genre counts.
You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.
Only books started on January 1st count towards this challenge.
There are four levels of participation:
Curious – Finish 2 series.
Fascinated – Finish 3 series.
Addicted – Finish 5 series.
Obsessed – Finish 10 series.
Interested? Visit the post about the challenge to learn more and sign up.
**NOTE: there is a similar challenge being offered at Secret Dreamworld of a Bookaholic here.

2nd Challenge 2010

This challenges was previously hosted by J. Kaye's Book Blog. When J. Kaye kindly offered to let Royal Reviews take over running this host we were very excited.

The great thing about this challenge is that it's not just for your second in a series books, but the second time you've read an author as well. This encourages you to give authors another try if you haven't liked the book you've read or simply another excuse to read a book by an author you loved.

Challenge Guidelines:

1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.--Non-Bloggers: Include your information in the comment section.

2. There are four levels:

-- Curious – Read 3 novels that are 2nd in a series or second time you've read the author.

-- Fascinated – Read 6 that are 2nd in a series or second time you've read the author.

-- Addicted – Read 12 novels that are 2nd in a series or second time you've read the author.

-- Obsessed – Read 20 novels 2nd in a series or second time you've read the author.

3. Any genre counts.

4. You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.

5. Challenge begins January 1st thru December, 2010. Only books started on January 1st count towards this challenge.

6. When you sign up under Mr. Linky, put the direct link to the post about the 2nd Reading Challenge. Include the URL so that other participants can find join in and read your reviews and post.

Thriller and Suspense Challenge

January 1, 2010 - December 31, 2010

Book Chick City is hosting the Thriller and Suspense Challenge 2010. Last year, J. Kaye Book Blog hosted it.

The Details:
• You don't have to select your books ahead of time, you can just add them as you go. Also if you do list them upfront then you can change them, nothing is set in stone! The books you choose can crossover into other challenges you have on the go.
• If you decide to participate in this challenge please use the links I have set up below with the buttons to post on your sidebar, this way others can find their way back to this post and join in the fun.
• If you decide to join this challenge be sure to create a post telling others, please make sure you add a link back to this post so others can join in.
• You can join anytime between now and the later part of next year.
• There will be a place for you to link your reviews, but this is optional.

Now, there are many different sub-genres of thriller, so don't go thinking that you don't actually read these kinds of books because I bet you read more than you think. As I mentioned above you can choose from the numerous sub-genres, from cosy mysteries such as Agatha Christie to the more hard-boiled kind like V I Warshawski by Sara Paretsky, or even supernatural/ paranormal suspense written by the likes of Laurell K Hamilton (Anita Blake) and Kelley Armstrong. So, there you have it, this challenge will have something for everyone I'm sure! :)
To help you figure out and decide, J. Kaye has kindly given me the sub-genre list that she compiled when hosting the challenge. To view this list go HERE.

ENDED- Holiday Reading Challenge 2009

November 20 - December 31, 2009

Nely at All About {n} is hosting the 2009 Holiday Reading Challenge.

She writes:

As I'm sure you can all tell, I'm in a "Christmassy" mood already. The blog is decked out, my giveaways are up, the iPod is set to holiday tunes, and I'm ready to snuggle up with a... Frappucino (because sadly, it is still too hot in Florida for hot chocolate). But what I'm really ready for is to crack open those holiday books that I have (bows head in shame) already begun buying. I can't help it! I love reading holiday books - they make me feel warm and toasty inside. And I thought what better way to get some of you guys in that same mood then to have (ahem) my very FIRST reading challenge. (Hooray!)
The Rules:

You can read anywhere from 1 to 5 books for the challenge and, of course, you are more than welcome to surpass that number.
Books must be holiday related books. That's right, the holiday doesn't really matter, but it would be more "jolly" if your choices were Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.
The size of the book does not matter, nor does the genre.
It is also okay for the book to overlap with other challenges.
No children's books. YA is okay. And so are re-reads.
There will be goodies. At the end of every week that the challenge is running Nely will choose one winner from the review links and allow them to pick a book of their choosing from a provided list. Meaning the more books you read, review and link up, the more chances you have at winning a "present".

EXPIRED Summer Vacation Reading Challenge 2009

May 22 - September 7, 2009

Molly at My Cozy Book Nook is hosting the Summer Vacation Reading Challenge 2009. She writes:

I love to travel, but with the economy the way it is, a get-away summer vacation is not in the budget this year. However, books are very affordable (and libraries add new meaning to the phrase "price is no object"). I anticipate taking many 'literary' vacations over the course of the next few months, and I hope you can join me as well.
There are two different levels of participation from which to choose:

Beach Bum: you will read 3 books during this time frame (a leisurely book-a-month); cross-over book selections from other challenges may count; and you do not have to list books in advance -- after all, summer vacation is a time for spontaneity.

Globe Trotter: you will commit to reading 6 pre-selected books during this time frame, but you may substitute up to 3 books due to changes in travel plans. Cross-overs for 5 out of the 6 books are allowed, but ideally one book will be read for this challenge alone.
The guidelines are simple: you may read any literary genre that you enjoy - provided it allows you to "travel" to a different locale that you would like to visit.

Prizes:

One "fun" prize for those who sign up for the challenge prior to May 15. There are several ways to better your chances of winning...check out the post about the challenge to read more.
There will also be a prize awarded at the end of the challenge. You must complete the challenge in order to qualify for the drawing - but for each book read and reviewed, you will have one submitted entry. The grand prize will be a $20 Amazon gift certificate --- a great way to start the new fall reading season!

To read all the details and sign up for the challenge through Mr. Linky, please visit the post about the challenge.

Disney Literature Challenge (Perpetual)

Perpetual Challenge - NO TIME LIMITS

Sarah Miller of Reading, Writing, Musing... is hosting a Disney Literature Challenge. Her post is wonderful (you should read it even if you don't think you want to do this one). In part, she writes:

Now, some of my very favorite book people harbor strong anti-Disney tendencies. (Cam, this means you. I'm betting on Linda and Jim, too.) In their honor, and in hopes of putting a tiny chip in the mountain of gratitude I owe them, I'm proposing a Disney Literature Challenge. Let's dig up the uncorrupted originals, and see how these stories looked before Uncle Walt had his way with them, shall we?
AND:

No time limits, no minimums, no obligations. Pick the ones you like and quit when you get sick of the whole idea. Wanna skip the bulky ones like Dickens, Hugo and White? Be my guest. If the multimedia approach of comparing the book to the movie appeals to you, go for it. I'm particularly hoping some of the anti-Disney camp might be good sports and take a refresher look at some of the films. Rereads are legal, even encouraged.

Sarah has listed the books to read on the post about the challenge. Interested? Why not join in the fun and leave her a comment?

Perpetual Challenge - No Time Limit
(started 05-01-09 - ???)

Rob at Rob Around Books is hosting 100 Shots of Shorts - a reading challenge designed to encourage the reading of short stories. Rob writes:

Why the name? Well to me, reading a short story is very much akin to slugging down a shot of spirit or coffee - it offers a quick on-the-fly story hit to boost spirit and/or morale, so I could think of no better term to give it.
Rob has links to some awesome short literature, and has created his own list of shorts he wants to read. To join in, visit Rob at his blog and leave him a comment with a link to your post about the challenge.

EXPIRED - Romance Reading Challenge 2009

Romance Reading Challenge 2009

January 1 - December 31, 2009

Naida from The Bookworm is hosting the Romance Reading Challenge for 2009. She points out that Romance Reading is not just about the bodice-rippers...
There is a huge selection of books in this category such as contemporary romance, historical romance, romantic suspense and paranormal romance to name a few. As long as the story has romantic love between the two main characters your selection will fit this challenge. The novels do not need to have a happy ending either, there can also be unrequited love.
The goal is to read a minimum of five (5) Romance novels during the challenge period. You can change your list at any times and crossovers with other challenges is allowed. Naida is encouraging you to provide links to your reviews of the books you read.

To sign up, visit the post about the challenge and use Mr. Linky (also leave a comment!).

1.Hot Stuff – Janet Evanovich & Leanne Banks
The Wyoming Kid – Debbie Macomber
Home for the Holidays – Debbie Macomber
Strike Zone – Kate Angell

EXPIRED - Themed Reading Challenge 2009

February 1, 2009 - July 31, 2009

The Themed Reading Challenge is a six month challenge designed to help readers clear books from their to-be-read stacks which center around a common theme or themes. Here are the “rules”:
1. Books should be chosen from the reader’s TBR pile (this may be an actual physical pile or a virtual pile).
2. The goal is to read 4 to 6 books linked by theme.
3. Overlaps with other challenges are allowed.
4. Readers may change their list of books at any time.
5. Readers may choose three different levels of participation:
• Read at least 4 books with the same theme.
• Read at least 5 books that share at least TWO themes.
• Read at least 6 books that share MORE than two themes.
Themes can be geographic, genre, author, subject matter, or anything in between! Last year’s themes were wonderfully creative and varied and included such things as: books about books, books set in New England, books with a color in the title, books about vampires, books with the word ‘lady’ in the title, Gothic classics, fairy tales retold for adults, highschool classics, Asian culture, feathered friends, WWII, Canada, books in translation, and Beverly Cleary. There were many others I have not listed here!
The only thing limiting your choices is your imagination - so have fun!

EXPIRED - A to Z Challenge 2009

Sponsored by Becky

General reminder of what you're signing up for:

Option A: Read authors A to Z. Commit to reading 26 books theoretically speaking.

Option B: Read titles A to Z. Commit to reading 26 books theoretically speaking.

Option C: Read both authors A to Z and titles A to Z (52 books; this is the challenge Joy created)

Option D: Read internationally A to Z (books representing 26 different countries) (The books could be from international authors (writers from that country); however, it's fine if a book is only set in that country. If need be, instead of countries one could use cities, states, regions, etc. The idea is to use proper place names. If you'd like you could even use a few fictional countries.)

Option E: Read 26 Alphabet books. Embrace your inner child and go visit the children's section!

Mention in your comment which option(s) you'll be committing to. Sign ups begin December 1, 2008. (The challenge does NOT start until January 1, 2009, but early sign ups are definitely encouraged!) The challenge closes to new participants on June 30, 2009.
